Preparation day: To the global South - Thursday 30 november - Brussel - VUB

For all departing students - ENGLISH SESSION - from 09u30 tot 16u30 - Brussel/VUB Etterbeek

Who for?

This formation day is meant for all students of the VUB, EhB, University of Ghent, HoGent, Arteveldehogeschool, HOWEST, KU Leuven, VIVES, University of Antwerp, Artesis Plantyn Hogeschool, Karel De Grote-hogeschool, the hogere Zeevaartschool Antwerp, UHasselt and PXL, who in 2017 travel for their studies to the global South. Other people interested are also welcome*.

What may you expect?

Through concrete case studies, exercises and group discussions you will gather ideas, theoretical frameworks and tips and tricks for an enriching (study) experience in the global south. The following themes will be dealt with:

Intercultural competences - Living and working in another culture isn't always evident. How to communicate with people from another culture? How you handle (culturally) not familiar situations in a creative and flexible way? How do you invest in establishing positive relations in your host country? During this preparation day you get the chance to practise these intercultural skills. These will help you to build positive relations and collaborations in your host country.

My role as intern/volunteer/researcher- What´s the use of my internship/research/volonteering in and for the Global South and myself? What is the best way to handle this? Do I then identify as development cooperation worker? What is development cooperation and which role can I take on in this?

Communication about the global South - Already during your stay in the global South you communicate on your experiences on the spot. Through e-mails, blogs and other social media you keep the homefront informed. Exactly because or this it is important to reflect on the way how you tell your story prior to your travels; How you talk about this intense experiences to people who have not been there themselves? How you bring this story with respect for the people you will get to know there?

We are not going to discuss the topic on scholarships and practical preparations (eg. travel documents, vaccinations). We advise you to take contact with the international office of your (college) university or get informed by visiting the website of Belgian Foreign Affairs (info in Dutch and French).
